Shavua Tov and Chodesh Tov. As many of you may be aware, Jerusalem will be playing host today to a massive Hareidi protest against the IDF draft, with attendance expected in the hundred thousands. Whether or not this protest is justified or necessary, is irrelevant, because, aside from the expected vandalism, riots, and violence, there is the serious issue of massive ביטול תורה. The sin of ביטול תורה is so serious that the Gemara (ברכות ה) writes: “Anyone who is able to be involved in Torah and fails to, G-d will bring upon him immense suffering…“
Starting at 13:00 Israel Time (06:00 Eastern Time), all of the לומדי תורתך לשמה will be abandoning their sefarim in protest, leaving the Jewish People in a very precarious and vulnerable position. I ask each and every one of you, no matter where you are located, to try to learn a little bit of extra Torah, or at the very least say a few perakim of Tehilim, during the protest to counteract the huge ביטול תורה and חילול השם that is expected then- when the “Spiritual Army of Hashem” leaves their posts, it’s up to us to fill in their spots and prevent a potential calamity. With Hashem’s help, we will merit a national fulfillment of “ראשי חדשים לעמך נתת זמן כפרה לכל תולדותם,” by atoning for the sins of our otherwise-occupied brothers through our extra learning, and merit an erasing of the real עמלק (not their portrayal of מדינת ישראל) in this special time of עת רצון.
